Hundreds of firefighters gathered in Lisbon on November 25, 2024, to protest for career recognition and fair compensation. The demonstration took place outside Campus XXI, where union representatives were meeting with government officials. Firefighters expressed their frustration over stagnant salaries and inadequate risk allowances, emphasizing that their profession has not seen a significant pay adjustment in over two decades.
The protest was organized by sapper firefighters from various regions of Portugal, including Coimbra, Leiria, Sardoal, Setúbal, and Viseu. Many participants wore uniforms, while others donned black t-shirts with slogans such as “Respect” and “Shame” to highlight their grievances. The demonstrators voiced their concerns about the lack of salary adjustments, which they claim have left many firefighters earning less than the national minimum wage when allowances are excluded.
The unions plan to return to the negotiating table on December 3rd, with a firm commitment to maintain their demands. The firefighters are determined to continue their fight for recognition and fair compensation, as they believe their contributions to public safety and emergency response deserve proper acknowledgment and remuneration.
