Hundreds of Portuguese firefighters gathered outside the national parliament in Lisbon on Wednesday, demanding better working conditions, pay, and hours. The protest, organized by a national firefighting union, saw participants dressed in full firefighting gear, occupying the steps of the Assembleia da República. The event was marked by the use of smoke canisters, flares, and sirens, with some protesters holding signs that read “Shame.”
Background of the Protest
The protest comes after years of grievances from firefighters regarding their labor conditions. Many have expressed frustration over stagnant wages and long working hours, which they argue do not reflect the risks and challenges they face daily. The national firefighting union has been vocal about these issues, emphasizing the need for immediate action from the government.
In response to the protests, Minister of Internal Administration Margarida Blasco acknowledged the firefighters’ concerns but urged them to continue negotiations rather than resorting to protests. She stated that discussions were ongoing and that the government was committed to addressing the firefighters’ demands.
