Vodafone Foundation has officially launched the TOZI app in Portugal, aimed at combating cyberbullying and enhancing online safety for children and young people. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV), marks Portugal as the second European country to adopt the app, following its introduction in Ireland in August 2023.
The TOZI app is designed to empower young users by providing them with resources to understand and address bullying and cyberbullying situations, which often occur away from adult supervision. The app includes educational videos that depict fictional characters facing various challenges related to bullying, helping to raise awareness among young people.
In addition to educational content, TOZI offers users direct access to APAV’s Victim Support Line. This feature ensures that young individuals can receive secure and effective guidance on issues such as digital addiction, cyberbullying, and privacy concerns.
The Growing Issue of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is a significant concern across Europe, with a study conducted by the WHO Regional Office revealing that one in six school-aged youth are affected by digital harassment. The findings indicate:
- Prevalence of Cyberbullying: 16% of girls and 15% of boys reported being victims of cyberbullying.
- Engagement in Cyberbullying: One in eight young people admitted to participating in cyberbullying, with boys (14%) more likely to engage in such behavior compared to girls (9%).
These statistics highlight the urgent need for effective tools and resources to address and mitigate the impact of cyberbullying among youth.
TOZI’s Role in Promoting Online Safety
TOZI is part of Vodafone Foundation’s broader ‘Apps Against Abuse’ initiative, which aims to promote inclusion and support vulnerable individuals. Other apps in this portfolio include:
- Bright Sky: Provides support for those affected by domestic abuse.
- Zoteria: Assists the LGBTQ+ community and the general public in addressing hate crime.
Through these applications, Vodafone Foundation has connected over 2.8 million individuals impacted by domestic violence, abuse, and hate crime to essential advice, support, and educational resources.
Future Plans and Awareness Campaigns
Looking ahead, Vodafone Foundation and APAV plan to launch an awareness campaign in public schools throughout Portugal in 2025. This initiative aims to further educate young people about the dangers of cyberbullying and the importance of online safety, ensuring that they have the tools and knowledge to navigate the digital world responsibly.
In conclusion, the launch of the TOZI app represents a significant step forward in the fight against cyberbullying in Portugal. By providing young people with the resources they need to understand and combat bullying, Vodafone Foundation and APAV are working to create a safer online environment for all.
