The remains of Ryan Chan, a 29-year-old Irishman found dead in a police cell in Portugal, have been repatriated to Ireland ahead of his funeral. Chan, from Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was discovered deceased on September 11, following his arrest the previous night in Albufeira. His death has raised questions, prompting an investigation by Portugal’s National Republican Guard.

Ryan Chan was in Portugal with his partner to attend a wedding when he was arrested. Reports indicate that he was being held in connection with an alleged knife attack on his partner, a woman in her 20s. She was treated for her injuries in a local hospital and has since been released.

The circumstances surrounding Chan’s death remain unclear, prompting the National Republican Guard to launch an investigation. The police have not released further details, but the case has garnered significant attention both in Ireland and Portugal.

Mr Chan’s funeral will take place on Monday, September 23, at 10:15 AM, proceeding to the Church of the Irish Martyrs in Ballyraine, Letterkenny, Ireland for a service at 11 AM.
