Portugal has officially joined the United States’ State Partnership Program, a move aimed at enhancing military cooperation and bilateral relations. The announcement was made during a ceremony on January 14 at the Ministry of National Defense in Lisbon, attended by Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo and U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Randi Charno Levine.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During the ceremony, Defense Minister Nuno Melo emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that it would enhance military cooperation between Portugal and the United States. He noted that both countries share a long history as allies, particularly as founding members of NATO, contributing to peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region for over 75 years.
The State Partnership Program
Established in 1993, the State Partnership Program (SPP) has successfully fostered relationships between the U.S. National Guard and partner nations. The program facilitates military-to-military engagements and leverages relationships across various sectors, including government, economic, and social spheres.
The Role of Lajes Air Base
The Lajes Air Base in the Azores was described by Ambassador Levine as a significant symbol of U.S.-Portugal military cooperation. She noted that the U.S. government has invested more in this base than ever before in 2023, underscoring its importance in safeguarding the transatlantic alliance.
