Brazilian Man Denied Entry to Portugal for Work; Court Grants Temporary Relief

Concerned Brazilian man at airport holding passport.

A Brazilian man was recently denied entry at Lisbon Airport after he informed immigration officials that he intended to work in Portugal, despite initially claiming he was traveling as a tourist. The case has sparked legal action, resulting in a temporary court ruling in favor of the man, allowing him to remain in Portugal while the case is reviewed.

The incident apparently occurred when the Brazilian traveler arrived at Lisbon Airport and was questioned by immigration officials. Upon revealing his intention to seek employment, he was informed that he required a specific visa to do so. Consequently, he was sent back to Brazil.

However, the man sought legal recourse, and his case was brought before the Administrative Court. The presiding judge issued a temporary ruling, allowing him to remain in Portugal while the legal proceedings unfold.

In a recent announcement, António Leitão Amaro, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, stated that both Brazilian and East Timorese citizens can enter Portugal without a visa and apply for residency online. However, this proposal is currently under review in the Assembly of the Republic.
