Italians in Portugal Face Passport Delays Amid High Demand

In recent weeks, the Italian embassy in Lisbon has been overwhelmed by a surge of passport applications from Italian citizens residing in Portugal. Many have reported difficulties in securing appointments, leading to frustration and long wait times.

For many Italians living in Portugal, the routine of trying to renew their passports has become a daily challenge. The embassy’s online appointment system has been inundated, leaving many applicants without a clear path to securing their documents.

The difficulties don’t end with scheduling. Applicants must first register in a system called AIRE, which collects essential information about Italian citizens abroad. After successfully registering, many find that securing an appointment is still a daunting task.

The Italian community in Portugal has been steadily increasing with approximately 40% of the Italian citizens in Portugal of Brazilian descent, reflecting a significant demographic shift.
