Planning a trip to Portugal? After a memorable 10-day journey with my mom, who declared it her best trip ever, I’m excited to share everything you need to know to plan your own adventure in this stunning country.

Key Takeaways

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall for fewer crowds and better prices.
  • Packing Essentials: Layers and good walking shoes are a must.
  • Must-See Destinations: Lisbon, Madeira, Algarve Coast, Porto, and Sintra.
  • Culinary Delights: Don’t miss the pastel de nata and fresh seafood.

Getting to Portugal

To kick off your adventure, you’ll want to know how to get to Portugal. We took a direct flight from Washington Dulles to Lisbon Airport, which was super easy and streamlined. Once you arrive, the best way to get around is by renting a car. We chose Avis, and it worked out great for us. If you can drive a manual, you’ll save some money, but we opted for an automatic, which was a bit pricier but definitely worth it.

How Long to Stay

I recommend spending 10 days in Portugal. This duration fits perfectly with a corporate PTO schedule, allowing you to take a week off and include two weekends. It gives you ample time to explore the top spots while also fitting in some relaxation. Portugal may be small, but it’s packed with diverse landscapes, rich culture, and delicious food.

Best Time to Visit

The peak tourist season is during the summer months of June, July, and August. While the weather is sunny and pleasant, it also means larger crowds and higher prices. If possible, aim for the shoulder seasons of spring and fall for a more enjoyable experience with fewer tourists and better prices. Just remember to pack a jacket, as coastal winds can make it chilly.

What to Pack

When packing for Portugal, consider the following essentials:

  • Layers: The weather can change quickly, especially along the coast.
  • Good Walking Shoes: Cobblestone streets are everywhere, so comfort is key.
  • Light Luggage: A large suitcase can be cumbersome; opt for a backpack and a small carry-on.
  • Air Tag for Luggage: With the current travel system overwhelmed, an Air Tag can help track your luggage if it gets lost.

Itinerary Overview

Here’s a suggested 10-day itinerary to help you make the most of your trip:

  1. Days 1-2: Lisbon
  2. Days 3-6: Madeira
  3. Days 7-8: Algarve Coast
  4. Days 9-10: Porto

Culinary Delights

Portugal is a food lover’s paradise. Here are some must-try dishes:

  • Pastel de Nata: A delicious Portuguese custard tart.
  • Seafood: Fresh fish, especially cod and sardines, are abundant.
  • Wine and Cheese: Portugal is known for its excellent wines and cheeses, making for a perfect pairing.

Conclusion

Portugal is an incredible destination that deserves a spot on your travel bucket list. With its friendly people, rich culture, and stunning landscapes, it’s perfect for solo travelers, couples, or families. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or explore vibrant cities, Portugal has something for everyone. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need further tips for your trip!
