1. Lisbon

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a city that effortlessly combines tradition and modernity. Travel to Lisbon and you’ll find mainland Europe’s westernmost capital is a fascinating and inspiring place to spend a few days. Here are some top tips to make your visit unforgettable:

  • Visit All the Miradouros: Lisbon is full of hills, offering great views from the top. Our favorite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, which includes views of the castelo and the bridge. Another great spot is Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, near Bairro Alto.
  • Take a Walking Tour: Learn about the city’s history and rebirth. We recommend a private tour through Withlocals or the We Hate Tourism walking tour, which focuses on socially responsible travel.
  • Head Out to Belem: Belem used to be a suburb of Lisbon. Visit the Torre de Belem, Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Don’t miss Pastéis de Belem for the best egg tarts.

Lisbon has hills with amazing views, a great food and drink scene, and even a red bridge that looks like the Golden Gate. The city was flattened in the 18th century by a giant earthquake but has since been rebuilt. Lisbon is no longer off the beaten path but still has the charm of a mid-sized city with a mix of tourists and locals.

2. Porto

Porto is a city with a lot of character and rich history. It feels like real people live there, unlike some parts of Lisbon. Here are some must-do activities in Porto:

  • Tour the Port Wine Cellars: Take a tour and tasting at renowned cellars like Graham’s or Sandeman.

For a great view, visit Miradouro da Vitória. It’s worth the effort to climb the hill. Also, Jardim de Morro offers some of the best views of the city and the Ponte Dom Luis I bridge.

If you love cheese, visit Queijaria Do Almada. It’s a cheese lover’s dream come true. For a stylish setting and fantastic cocktails, head to the Royal Cocktail Club. And don’t miss Manteigaria – Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata for the best pastel de nata in town.

Porto is a compact city, so staying near the center will put you within walking distance of everything. We recommend staying in the Ribeira neighborhood along the river or in Bolhão for a more affordable and lively experience.
