Discovering the Charm of Fuseta’s Beaches
Fuseta, a hidden gem in the Algarve, offers stunning beaches perfect for relaxation and adventure.
One of Fuseta’s main attractions is its access to stunning beaches and nearby islands. The main beach, Praia da Fuseta, is located just a short walk from the village center. This sandy stretch is ideal for families, offering calm, shallow waters that are perfect for swimming. The beach is equipped with all the necessary amenities, including sunbeds, umbrellas, and a couple of beachfront bars where you can grab a refreshing drink.
For those looking to explore further, a short boat ride from the harbor will take you to Ilha da Fuseta, one of the most beautiful barrier islands in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. From Fuseta Island, you can walk to Armona Island, and an ideal day out is to get the ferry to Fuseta Island, walk to Armona for lunch, then get the ferry from Armona to Olhao.
These islands are known for their unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tranquility. Ilha da Fuseta, in particular, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike for its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking scenery.
The Heart of the Village? There’s Two.
Many visitors an locals flock to the port and beach side cafes in Fuseta. There’s the beautifully positioned beachfront cafe, Bord D’Agua which is literally on the beach and opens for breakfast, and in summer is still open after dark
A little further along the inlet are O Farol’s bar, which open at 10am and again, open late. Incredibly, an Algarve hero plays live music here, about 50 weeks of the year on Wednesday nights. Domingos Caetano has been the lead vocalist of Portuguese band Iris, since 1979, but returned to Fuseta some years ago and set up a music school.
Known locally as ‘The Professor’, he brings his music students to O Farol’s on Wednesday nights, almost every week of teh year, and it’s an unmissable night out if you’re in the village.
There are a couple of other bars on the quayside, including Cubanitos which are all friendly, have loads of outdoor seating and remain great value.
However, if you ask a local, they will tell you the heart of Fuseta is the square, about a 12 minute walk from the beach or quay.
Here you’ll find Club Recreativo Fuzetense, which was a members only club but now open to the public and an absolute must to visit. Coffees and drinks are available, but it’s wonderful architecture and position in the square make it unmissable. It was also used in the TV series, Lost in Fuseta, and has become a real hit with tourists visiting the village.
Around the square a number of restaurants, including Capri and just off the square, Tapas by Nik which are both hugely popular and in the summer you absolutely have to book.
The square, Praça da República also has a pharmacy and two newsagents as well as other cafe’s. A short walk back towards the beach will bring you to Patricio’s Sal Grosso. He’s a music fan, a football fan and serves up delicious cold tapas, and has both inside and outdoor seating.
A walk up the hill from the square will bring you to Nano Brew, a remarkable addition to Fuseta’s scene. Run by a Norwegian couple who came to the Algarve years ago, they have built a micro-brewery and serve up craft beer, drinks, and small tapas plates. In the off-season they only open Friday to Sunday, but in the summer, they extend the hours. But go early, as the bar is small and fills up almost after opening time.
Where else Can I Eat in Fuseta?
There are lots of options, most restaurants don’t have websites though, so if you want a reservation you need to pop in or find an email, as many of them are on Instagram.
Casa Corvo remains one of the most solid, best value restaurants. On the quayside, it’s busy, and a queue forms for the fresh fish, including sardines and turbot.
Restaurants like La Plage continue to do well, given it’s exceptional value, with a huge tuna steak priced at around €15. A short walk from La Plage is O Trevo, which is also recommended given its quality seafood and good value pricing.
The star of the culinary scene now in Fuseta however is Adega do Sal. Only open for a year, this restaurant is exceptional drawing visitors to Fuseta, simply to eat here.
Run by a family from the Alentejo, they have cleverly introduced a completely new type of menu to Fuseta. While the older restaurants focus on grilled fish, Adega do Sal bring Alentejo flavors but combine them with Algarve ingredients for a fascinating twist.
They also do an exceptional value hamburger for kids of all ages, Portuguese tapas or Petiscos, but their hero dishes are wonderful. The Alentejo Chouriço Assado grilled is fun and delicious and the surf-and-turf is ideal for seafood loving meat eaters. The Alentejo bread soup, or Açorda, is done Algarve style with prawns and is truly spectacular as are a simple plate of razor clams.
Remarkably, they also serve tremendous Sushi dishes and have a broad selection of drinks including Alentejo wines. It has become so popular now though, that a queue forms and you really should book well in advance, at least in the summer.

Planning Your Stay in Fuseta
Getting Around Fuseta
Navigating Fuseta is simple and convenient. You can, and should walk everywhere as there is nothing that is that far away. This summer, Bird scooters arrived, so if you do need a bit of help trekking back to your apartment or AirBnB, you can hop on a scooter.

Where to Stay in Fuseta
Remember, there are no hotels in Fuseta, so you need to arrange some other accommodation. The closest Fuseta had to a hotel was Mo de Cima. This gorgeous restored building was also a fabulous tapas bar, sitting right on the Ria. It’s currently for sale, and while the owner did continue to do room, or chalet rental, we believe that has also closed now.
There is also a campsite, which is always busy and hard to get a place in.
There’s also a small number of very stylish apartment blocks built in the last few years,. Formosa Village was the first of these, is preferred by many visitors as they are larger than the newer blocks, and all the top floor penthouses have huge roof terraces.
Other options are the Estudios Salinas and for a real novelty, there is a selection of house-boats available, which are moored just off the fuseta island coast.
