Top Attractions in Portugal’s Algarve: A Must-Visit Destination

Benagil Caves

The Algar de Benagil is one of the most spectacular natural features of the Algarve coastline. This massive sea cave has golden walls and an enclosed sandy beach. Sunlight floods in through a wide hole in the ceiling, creating a magical atmosphere.

You can only reach Benagil Cave from the water. Options include tour boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards (SUP), or even swimming from the nearby beach. The cave is so big that several boats can fit inside at the same time.

The area around Benagil is dotted with many other amazing sea caves. Most boat tours visit multiple caves on the way to or from Benagil Cave. This makes a visit here an absolute must-do in Algarve!

Be aware that the cave gets crowded, especially during the summer. To avoid the crowds, try to visit early in the morning or in the evening. Many tours offer sunrise or sunset experiences, which are truly unforgettable.

Silves

Silves is a charming traditional town where you can experience the authentic side of the Algarve. Walk around its cobbled streets, have lunch at one of the local restaurants, and – if you have some time and depending on the season – you can also visit some orange orchards or vineyards nearby.

Silves is worth exploring at leisure. Downhill from the fortress is the Sé (cathedral), built between 1242 and 1577 on the site of Xelb’s Grand Mosque. Opposite is the 16th-century Igreja da Misericórdia, replete with a fine Manueline side door.

The town itself is delightful, especially the area along the riverfront, which is lined with a small market and some excellent restaurants. Cruise boats from Portimão tie up here near the old bridge.

Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is wonderful! It’s an excellent area to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Algarve. The beach is wide and sandy, perfect for sunbathing or a game of beach volleyball. You can also take a stroll along the boardwalk, which is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. The views from the cliffs are stunning, especially at sunset. If you’re into water sports, there are plenty of options like jet skiing and parasailing. Don’t miss the chance to explore the nearby Senhora da Rocha chapel, a beautiful spot with amazing views.

Loulé

Loulé is a lively market town with a rich history. The Moors built a castle here in the 12th century. You can walk the ramparts for great views over the old town. There’s also a small museum within the grounds.

The town is famous for its covered fruit and vegetable market. This market is one of the busiest and most entertaining in the Algarve. The market is housed in a late 19th-century red-domed building with unique horseshoe-shaped windows. On Saturday mornings, the market spills out into the surrounding streets as farmers from nearby areas come to sell their crops.

Loulé also hosts two more markets on Saturdays. There’s a large and chaotic gypsy market on the edge of town and a farmer’s market near the covered market. The town’s charming old quarter makes it a great spot for a day trip.

Alvor

Alvor is one of the Algarve’s finest mid-size resort towns. It’s perfect for a laid-back vacation. The town has a charming mix of old and new. You can wander through narrow streets and find traditional Portuguese houses. The beaches here are stunning. Don’t miss Praia dos Três Irmãos and Praia da Prainha. Both are great for sunbathing and swimming. For a bit of adventure, try a cave tour near Alvor. It’s a fun way to explore the coastline. Alvor is also close to other cool spots like Faro and Vilamoura. So, it’s easy to take day trips and see more of the Algarve.

Praia da Luz

Praia da Luz is a hidden gem in the Algarve. It’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind. The beach is surrounded by steep colorful cliffs and crystal-clear blue water. It’s a bit closer to Lagos, making it a convenient escape from the busier areas.

Here are some things you can do at Praia da Luz:

  • Take a leisurely stroll along the beach.
  • Enjoy a meal at one of the seaside restaurants.
  • Explore the nearby cliffs for stunning views.

If you have extra time, visit Praia de Dona Ana, another gorgeous beach nearby. It’s worth the trip for its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Discover the best locations in Algarve: top spots for your next vacation. Explore Praia da Luz, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Silves, Sagres, Albufeira, Lagos, Tavira, Carvoeiro, Faro, and Vilamoura for a diverse Algarve experience.

Sagres

Sagres is a gem in the Algarve, known for its stunning coastal scenery. The town is perfect for those who love surfing. The headland faces three directions, so there’s always a beach with the right swell. You can find many rental shops, surf schools, and hostels here. The vibe is super laid-back.

Don’t miss the Fortaleza de Sagres. This fortress offers breathtaking views over the cliffs and along the coast to Cabo de São Vicente. It’s a must-see!

Cape Sagres is also a great spot for sunsets. The views are spectacular, and it’s a popular place for surfers and water sports fans. If you want to try surfing in Algarve, this is the best place to be.

Tip: Wear comfy shoes and maybe a light jacket. The area is windy and rocky.

Lagoa

This trail offers breathtaking views and is perfect for hiking enthusiasts. Another must-visit is Slide & Splash, a popular water park that’s fun for the whole family. Don’t miss out on the local wineries, where you can taste some of the best wines in the region. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures or just want to relax, Lagoa has something for everyone.

Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a charming town in the Algarve, perfect for exploring the Algarve: 5 family-friendly towns. One of the must-visit spots is Algar Seco. It’s like a natural playground made by the sea. Erosion over millions of years shaped cliffs into caves, rock pools, and windows that look right out onto the ocean. One famous spot, “A Boneca” or “The Doll,” is a small cave in a rock that used to look like a doll. From inside this cave, you can see out to the sea.

The top of Algar Seco also offers views over Carvoeiro beach, one of Portugal’s most beautiful sandy beaches. Apart from its natural beauty, Algar Seco has been designated as an important conservation area for its abundant birdlife, with species such as Cory’s Shearwaters and Yelkouan Shearwaters often seen flying nearby.

Another great activity is walking on the Carvoeiro Boardwalk. This wooden path follows the coastline, offering stunning views of the sea and cliffside. The boardwalk starts in the town of Carvoeiro and ends at Algar Seco.

Olhao and the Ria Formosa Islands

Olhao is the gateway to the stunning Ria Formosa Natural Park. This park stretches over 60 kilometers and is a maze of sandbanks and swamps. It’s a haven for birds and protected species.

From Olhao, you can catch a boat to the Ria Formosa islands. Private tours and shuttles run regularly from the village port. All the islands are beautiful, but Ilha do Farol stands out. Its small port and beach at the foot of the lighthouse are simply amazing.

Here are some activities you can enjoy:

  • Island hopping: Explore the idyllic beaches and enjoy the sun.
  • Seafood feasts: Savor fresh seafood at local eateries.
