Train Collision in Algarve Leaves Several Injured

A collision between a train and a car at a level crossing in Poço Barreto, Silves, Algarve, resulted in six injuries, including three serious cases. The accident disrupted rail traffic on the Algarve Line, which has since been restored.

The accident took place at 08:17 AM on a Friday, involving a train and a seven-seater vehicle at the Poço Barreto level crossing in Silves. The vehicle’s occupants, all Dutch nationals aged between 18 and 25, included three men and three women. The two most seriously injured, both 18-year-old women, were airlifted to Faro Hospital, while the other four were transported by ambulance.

Emergency Response

The emergency response was swift, involving 31 operatives, 11 vehicles, and one aerial unit. Firefighters from Silves and Lagoa, along with the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) and the National Republican Guard (GNR), were on the scene. The 24 passengers on the train were unharmed and were transported to their destinations by a bus provided by CP, the national railway company.

Restoration of Services

Following the accident, rail traffic on the Algarve Line between Alcantarilha and Silves was suspended. However, after the completion of rescue operations and confirmation of track conditions, services were restored by 11:30 AM. Road traffic at the level crossing was also resumed shortly before the rail services.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the collision. Initial reports indicate no damage to the railway line itself. The train involved in the accident was removed from the track by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), the company responsible for railway infrastructure.
