Gymnast Filipa Martins Makes History at Olympics

In a groundbreaking achievement, 28-year-old Filipa Martins has made history by becoming the first Portuguese woman to qualify for the final of the “All Around” artistic gymnastics competition at the Paris Olympic Games.

Representing Acro Clube da Maia, Martins secured her place in the finals with an impressive overall score of 53.166 points. Her performance included 14.133 points in Vault, 13.800 in Asymmetrical Bars, 12.600 on the Balance Beam, and 12.633 in the Floor exercise.

Hailing from Porto, this marks Martins’ third Olympic appearance, having previously competed in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where she finished 43rd. Now, she stands among the top 24 gymnasts who will compete in the final, alongside renowned athletes such as American Simone Biles.

The final is set for this Thursday, August 1st, at 5:15 pm Lisbon time. With strong support from her family and fellow Portuguese fans in the stands, Martins is ready to enjoy the moment saying seeing so many Portuguese supporters made her feel at home and whatever happens next, she was content with her performance and it felt like the pinnacle of her career.

This historic achievement not only marks a personal triumph for Filipa Martins but also a significant milestone for Portuguese gymnastics on the global stage.
