Teachers gathered in Lisbon advocating for education reform.

On October 5, 2024, hundreds of teachers from across Portugal gathered in Rossio, Lisbon, to participate in a demonstration marking World Teachers’ Day. The event aimed to highlight ongoing issues within the education sector and advocate for necessary reforms to improve the teaching profession.

The rally commenced at 2:30 PM, with teachers arriving from various regions, including as far as Porto. Many wore black t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan translates as “Teachers in Struggle” and carried green placards advocating for the profession’s recognition and support.

The teachers marched towards Largo de Camões, aiming to remind the government of their ongoing struggles and demands.

The demonstration was organized by the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof), a union affiliated with the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP). The event served as a platform to celebrate the teaching profession while also reminding the government of the pressing issues that need to be addressed, especially with the upcoming discussions on the State Budget for 2025 (OE2025).

With the government set to present its budget proposal soon, teachers are keen to ensure their voices are heard in the negotiations. The rally not only highlighted their demands but also aimed to foster a sense of unity among educators nationwide.
