Portugal Sees Protests Against Uncontrolled Immigration

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Lisbon on September 29, 2024, to voice their concerns over what they describe as “uncontrolled immigration” into Portugal. The rally, organized by the far-right CHEGA party, highlighted growing tensions surrounding immigration policies and their perceived impact on national security and housing.

The protest saw thousands of participants waving Portuguese flags and chanting the national anthem. Many carried banners with slogans demanding an end to mass immigration and the expulsion of immigrants who commit crimes. The atmosphere was charged, reflecting deep-seated anxieties about the current immigration landscape in Portugal.

The CHEGA party, which has gained significant traction in recent elections, argues that while immigration can be beneficial, it must be regulated. Party leader André Ventura emphasized that immigration should not solely be viewed through the lens of social welfare but must also consider the housing crisis affecting many Portuguese citizens. He warned that if immigration continues at its current rate, the country may face severe housing shortages.
