Portugal Government Ready to Increase Support for UNRWA

Published on

Portugal is poised to enhance its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) following recent restrictions imposed by Israel on the agency’s operations. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel made this announcement during a parliamentary session, emphasizing the humanitarian necessity of UNRWA’s work amidst escalating tensions in the region.

The announcement comes at a critical time when the humanitarian situation for Palestinian refugees is dire. The Israeli parliament recently passed a law that significantly hampers UNRWA’s ability to operate effectively, prompting international concern and calls for increased support from member states.

In a move to bolster support for UNRWA, Paula Santos, the parliamentary leader of the Communist Party (PCP), proposed an amendment to the 2025 state budget that would allocate an additional €5 million to the agency. Santos highlighted that while this amount may seem modest compared to the overwhelming humanitarian needs, it represents a significant step towards solidarity and justice for the Palestinian people.

The Portuguese government’s readiness to enhance support for UNRWA signals a commitment to humanitarian principles amidst a challenging geopolitical landscape. As the situation in the region continues to evolve, Portugal’s actions may influence other EU member states to reconsider their positions on aid and support for Palestinian refugees
