New Earthquake Felt on Terceira Island This Afternoon

A new earthquake was felt this afternoon on Terceira Island, marking the seventh seismic event recorded since midnight, according to the Azores Seismovulcanic Information and Monitoring Center (CIVISA). The latest quake occurred at 4:20 PM local time (5:20 PM in Lisbon), registering a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located approximately four kilometers south-southeast of Raminho.

The first tremor of the day was detected at 1:26 AM local time (2:26 AM in Lisbon), with an epicenter about four kilometers east of Serreta, registering a magnitude of 2.6. These seismic events are part of a volcanic crisis that has been ongoing on Terceira Island since June 2022.

The strongest quake today occurred at 3:27 AM local time (4:27 AM in Lisbon), with a magnitude of 3.7, and was widely felt across the island. The other five earthquakes recorded since midnight had magnitudes below 3.0.

On June 27, CIVISA raised the alert level for the Santa Bárbara volcano to V3, indicating a reactivation of the volcanic system with signs of elevated activity. The alert level for the fissural volcanic system on Terceira Island was set to V1.
