Lisbon Metro Expands Fleet with Additional 36 Carriages

Published on

The Lisbon Metro is set to enhance its fleet with the addition of 36 new carriages, complementing the previously contracted 72. This initiative, confirmed by the Minister of Environment, aims to improve public transport efficiency and accessibility in the city.

Government Commitment to Public Transport

The announcement was made during a presentation of the new ML 24 series carriages. Maria da Graça Carvalho, the Minister of Environment and Energy, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and reducing carbon emissions in public transport.

In late 2023, the Lisbon Metro had already initiated an international public tender for 24 new triple units, which equate to 72 carriages, with an option for an additional 36. The contract for the initial 72 carriages was signed with Stadler Rail Valencia on October 22 and is currently awaiting approval from the Court of Auditors.

The total investment for the 72 carriages is approximately €134 million, with €45 million co-financed by the Sustainable Program 2030. The remaining funds will be sourced from the Environmental Fund. The contract is set for a duration of 54 months, following the necessary approvals.

The government aims to promote public transport usage over individual car travel, aligning with its goals of sustainability and efficiency. The new carriages are expected to be operational by 2025, further enhancing the city’s transport network.
