Chaos erupted in Lisbon over the past week, following the police shooting of a 43-year-old man, Odair Moniz. The unrest has led to nearly 30 vehicles being set ablaze and seven injuries, including two police officers. Authorities have reported a total of 140 incidents related to the disturbances, prompting widespread concern and travel warnings for tourists

The unrest began on October 21, ignited by public outrage over the death of Odair Moniz, who was shot by police during an attempted arrest. Witnesses reported that Moniz allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to assault officers, leading to the use of firearms. This incident has raised questions about police conduct and accountability.

The Public Security Police (PSP) have documented over 140 incidents of public disturbances since the riots began. The violence has not only resulted in property damage but has also raised concerns about public safety in the city. The PSP reported that five buses were damaged, and multiple police vehicles were also affected.

José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, has urged caution against political exploitation of the events. He emphasized the importance of allowing justice to take its course and highlighted the need for responsible discourse surrounding the incident. Aguiar-Branco stated, “There is freedom of expression in Portugal, but it comes with responsibility.”
