EDP Art Reef: A Dive into the World’s Greatest Places 2024

The EDP Art Reef, a unique underwater art installation and artificial reef, has been named one of the World’s Greatest Places for 2024. This innovative project, spearheaded by Portuguese street artist Vhils and Energias de Portugal (EDP), offers scuba divers an extraordinary underwater experience in the Algarve.

Key Facts

  • Location: Algarve, Portugal
  • Depth: 40 feet
  • Creators: Vhils (Alexandre Farto) and EDP
  • Materials: Ocean-safe materials from coal-fired power stations
  • Environmental Impact: Supports marine life and coral restoration
  • Recognition: Named one of the World’s Greatest Places 2024 by TIME

A Unique Underwater Experience

The EDP Art Reef is situated in the Algarve, a region already popular among divers for its purpose-sunk Portuguese Navy warships. The reef sits at a depth of just 40 feet, making it accessible for new divers. The site combines art and environmental sustainability, featuring ocean-safe materials removed from EDP’s coal-fired power stations. EDP aims to phase out coal by 2025 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

Art Meets Environmental Sustainability

The project is a collaboration between Vhils, also known as Alexandre Farto, and EDP. Vhils’ designs, including faces and footprints, are etched onto 13 newly sunken concrete and steel structures. These structures serve as both art installations and artificial reefs, attracting marine life such as octopi, spider crabs, urchins, and various fish species.

Coral Restoration Efforts

The restoration group Plant a Coral has played a crucial role in the project by transplanting pieces of coral broken by fishing nets onto the new structures. This effort not only enhances the visual appeal of the reef but also supports marine biodiversity. The coral restoration is a significant step in transforming the site into a thriving underwater ecosystem.

A Testament to Transformation

Arlindo Serrão, founder of Portugal Dive, notes that the objects appear as though they have been naturally submerged by the sea, thanks to signs of wear, rust, and encrustation. This illusion adds to the site’s allure, making it seem as ancient and mysterious as any land-based park.

Global Recognition

The EDP Art Reef has garnered international attention and was recently named one of the World’s Greatest Places for 2024 by TIME magazine. This recognition highlights the project’s innovative approach to combining art, environmental sustainability, and marine conservation.

Future Prospects

With EDP’s commitment to phasing out coal and achieving net-zero emissions, the EDP Art Reef serves as a model for how former energy sources can be repurposed to benefit the environment. The project not only offers a unique diving experience but also contributes to the global conversation on sustainability and conservation.
