Bobi, a beloved Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal, has passed away at the remarkable age of 31, making him the oldest dog ever recorded. His owner, Leonel Costa, announced the sad news on social media, marking the end of an era for dog lovers worldwide.
Bobi was born in a rural village in central Portugal, where he was initially destined for a tragic fate. His family had too many animals, and newborn puppies were often put down. However, Bobi was accidentally left behind, and his life began when Leonel Costa and his siblings discovered him hidden among firewood.
As Bobi grew, he became a cherished member of the Costa family. Leonel, who was just eight years old at the time of Bobi’s birth, shared that the dog was never kept on a leash and enjoyed a diet that included human food.
Guinness World Record Holder
In February 2023, Bobi was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest dog ever, surpassing the previous record of 29 years and five months held by an Australian cattle dog named Bluey. Bobi celebrated his 31st birthday earlier this year, and his milestone was marked by a gathering of over 100 people who came to honor him.
