Nazare: The Sleepy Portuguese Town That’s Home To The World’s Biggest Waves

Nazaré, a quaint fishing town in Portugal, transforms into a surfing paradise from late autumn to spring, attracting thrill-seekers from around the globe. Known for its colossal waves, it has become a hotspot for surfers and tourists alike, offering a unique blend of culture and adventure.

Nazaré is renowned for its massive waves, which are formed by a combination of North Atlantic winter storms and the underwater Nazaré Canyon. This unique geographical feature funnels swells into the area, creating waves that can reach staggering heights.

Earlier this year, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner made headlines by riding a wave measuring 28.57 meters (94 feet), potentially breaking the previous record of 26.21 meters (86 feet) set in 2020, also in Nazaré.

Despite the influx of tourists, Nazaré has managed to retain its cultural identity. Locals still wear traditional clothing, and the town is filled with unique restaurants and shops that reflect its rich history.

Visitors can enjoy local delicacies at highly-rated restaurants like Restaurante Gil Vicente and Rosa dos Ventos, where seafood is a highlight and prices remain reasonable, making it accessible for all.
