First High-Speed PPP Awarded to Mota-Engil Consortium

The Portuguese government has officially awarded the first public-private partnership (PPP) for the high-speed rail line connecting Lisbon and Porto to a consortium led by Mota-Engil. This significant milestone was announced during an event held on Thursday, marking a crucial step in enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure.

The announcement of the contract took place with key figures including Luís Montenegro and Miguel Pinto Luz present for the decision on the LusoLav consortium. This consortium includes five other Portuguese construction companies: Teixeira Duarte, Casais, Alves Ribeiro, Conduril, and Gabriel A.S. Couto.

The LusoLav consortium was the only bidder to submit a proposal for this public tender, which was evaluated positively by the jury in September. The financial assessment revealed a net present value (NPV) of €1,661,362,811.55, closely aligning with the reference price set by the government.

In addition to the Porto-Oiã segment, the government has already initiated the process for the second PPP, which will cover the Oiã to Soure section. The deadline for proposals for this segment is set for January 6. Mota-Engil has publicly stated its intention to participate in this upcoming tender.

This high-speed rail initiative is expected to revolutionize travel in Portugal, making it faster and more efficient, while also contributing to the country’s economic growth and connectivity.
