Construction of New Lisbon Eastern Hospital Set to Begin

Construction of the new Lisbon Eastern Hospital (HLO) is officially set to commence this week. This significant healthcare project, announced by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, represents an investment of approximately 380 million euros and aims to enhance the healthcare infrastructure in Portugal.

The new hospital will replace six existing units of the Central Hospital of Lisbon (CHLC), which includes notable facilities such as Hospital São José and Hospital de Santa Marta. The HLO will not only maintain all current specialties but will also introduce new ones, including Rheumatology, Nuclear Medicine, and Radiation Oncology.

The project is budgeted at 380 million euros, with significant financial backing from the European Investment Bank (EIB), which will provide up to 190 million euros. Additionally, the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) will contribute up to 100 million euros.

Once completed, the HLO is expected to be fully operational by 2027, providing a modern healthcare facility equipped with advanced medical technologies and a strong focus on education and research in collaboration with local universities. This initiative is anticipated to enhance the quality of healthcare services available to the residents of Lisbon and surrounding areas, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for the population.
