Portuguese Citizens Can Enter China Visa-Free Starting October 15

Starting October 15, 2024, Portuguese passport holders will be able to enter China without a visa for up to 15 days. This new policy, which will remain in effect until December 31, 2025, is part of China’s broader initiative to boost international tourism and foreign investment following the pandemic.

Background of the Visa Policy

The announcement was made by Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press conference. The extension of the visa exemption to Portugal had been a long-standing request from Portuguese business leaders, aiming to facilitate easier travel for business and tourism.

This move is part of a larger strategy by the Chinese government to revitalize its economy, which has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The country had previously imposed strict border controls, leading to a sharp decline in international travel.

The introduction of visa-free travel for Portuguese citizens marks a significant step in strengthening ties between Portugal and China. As both countries look to recover from the pandemic’s effects, this policy is expected to foster greater economic collaboration and cultural exchange, paving the way for a more interconnected future.
