New Meeting Scheduled Between Prime Minister and PS Leader for October 3rd

The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General of the PS are set to meet again on Thursday evening as part of the ongoing negotiations for the 2025 State Budget. This meeting follows their initial discussions last Friday, which revealed significant differences in their positions but did not lead to a breakdown in negotiations.

The upcoming meeting is crucial as the deadline for submitting the 2025 State Budget to the Assembly of the Republic is October 10. The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and the PS Secretary-General, Pedro Nuno Santos, are under pressure to reach an agreement that satisfies both parties and the public.

During their first meeting, Pedro Nuno Santos rejected the government’s proposed changes to the IRS Jovem and IRC, advocating instead for the allocation of budgetary margins towards public investment in housing for the middle class, an extraordinary increase in pensions, and a special regime for doctors in the National Health Service (SNS).

In response, Luís Montenegro described Santos’s proposals as “radical and inflexible,” but he committed to presenting a counterproposal aimed at reconciling their differences.
