New Biometric Data Collection Requirement for Non-Schengen Citizens Entering Portugal

The Portuguese government has announced a new requirement for citizens entering the country from outside the Schengen Area. Starting soon, these individuals will be obligated to provide biometric and personal data at land borders. This initiative aims to enhance border control and ensure regulated immigration.

The Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, announced this significant change following a recent Council of Ministers meeting. He emphasized that the collection of biometric data is a crucial step in ensuring adequate information for monitoring immigration and maintaining the regularity of entries into Portugal.

The proposed law, which will be sent to the Assembly of the Republic, outlines a new system for controlling entries and exits at external borders. This measure is seen as a response to the need for more effective immigration management in Portugal.

The collection of biometric data, which includes fingerprints and facial recognition, is intended to strengthen border security. This data will help authorities verify identities and monitor individuals entering the country more effectively. The government believes that this approach will lead to a more regulated immigration process, allowing for better integration of immigrants into Portuguese society.
