On Sunday, an estimated 180,000 motorcyclists converged at the Our Lady of Fatima shrine in central Portugal for the ninth annual Pilgrimage of the Blessing of Helmets. This event has grown significantly in recent years, becoming a major gathering for bikers seeking divine protection and community spirit.

The Pilgrimage of the Blessing of Helmets has become one of the most significant events for motorcyclists in Portugal. Under the motto “We are shaped and guided by what we love!”, the pilgrimage began with a vibrant parade featuring motorcyclists carrying a statue of Our Lady of Fatima next to the Basilica of the Holy Trinity.

The event culminated in a Mass where the helmets of the bikers were blessed, symbolizing a plea for safety on the roads. This year’s turnout marked the largest attendance in the event’s history, reflecting its increasing prominence.

The Fatima shrine is not only a place of pilgrimage for motorcyclists but also holds deep historical and religious significance. The most important pilgrimage occurs on May 13 each year, commemorating the date when Mary, the mother of Jesus, is believed to have appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. This event has been recognized by the Catholic Church, with Pope Francis canonizing two of the children in 2017.
