Portugal’s New Fire Prevention Campaign Aims to Combat Ongoing Wildfires

Portugal has launched a new fire prevention campaign as wildfires continue to devastate the island of Madeira. This initiative comes in response to the worst wildfire the country has faced since 2017, threatening a UNESCO-listed forest.

The Current Wildfire Situation

Firefighters on the Portuguese island of Madeira are currently battling a massive wildfire that has been raging for a week. This fire is the most severe the country has experienced since 2017, when Portugal faced its deadliest blazes. The wildfire threatens a UNESCO-listed forest, adding to the urgency of the situation.

The New Fire Prevention Campaign

In response to the ongoing crisis, Portugal has launched a new fire prevention campaign that will run until 2026. Tiago Oliveira, president of the Agency for the Integrated Management of Rural Fires (AGIF), emphasized the importance of this initiative. The campaign aims to build on the success of the previous awareness efforts that began in 2018.

Campaign Strategies

  • Personalized Door-to-Door Contact: The new strategy will involve direct engagement with residents to educate them about fire prevention.
  • Educational Programs: The Ministry of Education will be involved in campaigns in schools, aiming to mobilize around half a million pupils over the next five years.

The Need for a Coordinated European Approach

Oliveira believes that Europe needs a more coordinated mechanism to combat wildfires effectively. He suggests that European countries should adopt a model similar to that of Canada and the United States, where neighboring countries’ forces work together seamlessly.

As Portugal continues to battle severe wildfires, the new fire prevention campaign offers a proactive approach to mitigate future risks. By involving local communities and educational institutions, the country aims to build a more fire-resilient society.
