In Cascais, a coastal area near Lisbon popular with British tourists, a major wildfire has erupted. Dry and windy conditions have exacerbated the blaze, which has come dangerously close to homes and holiday apartments. Over 400 firefighters and more than a dozen firefighting aircraft have been deployed to control the fire. Despite the efforts, 14 people, including 11 firefighters, have been injured.

Flash Floods in France and Holland

In France, over 45,000 lightning strikes were recorded over the weekend, leading to significant flooding in the Haute-Marne region. Five people were hospitalized, mainly for hypothermia. Severe storms have proven deadly in the mountains of Germany and Austria. Two young hikers, aged 18 and 22, died in separate incidents after being struck by lightning. Warnings are in place as more stormy weather is expected.

Ongoing Wildfires in Greece, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria

Greece is battling multiple wildfires, with temperatures soaring to 43°C. In the northern mountainous area of Falakro, a wall of flames has been burning for five days. North Macedonia is also struggling with seven wildfires, particularly in the Serta Mountain area. In Bulgaria, wildfires in the municipality of Bolyarovo have finally been brought under control after seven days of firefighting efforts.
