1. Lisbon
Lisbon is a city full of charm and history. It has hills with amazing views, a great food and drink scene, and even has a red bridge that looks suspiciously like the Golden Gate. Here are some top tips to make your visit unforgettable:
- Visit All the Miradouros: Lisbon is a city full of hills, which means there are great views to be had at the top of them. Our favorite views in the city were from Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, which is all the way at the top of the hill behind Alfama. The view, which includes the castelo and the bridge, is worth the climb. Another great view is Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, which is near Bairro Alto with views back towards the castle.
- Take a Walking Tour: Learn about the city’s history and rebirth. We actually did two different walking tours in Lisbon, and would recommend them both. The first was a private walking tour through Withlocals, which is one of our favorite tour companies. They connect you with a local who takes you on a one-of-a-kind private city tour to see their city through their eyes, which is unique. We also did the We Hate Tourism walking tour through the “Real City,” which is more focused on socially responsible travel and takes you to a neighborhood that you probably wouldn’t ordinarily make it to on your own. Both are great for different reasons.
- Head Out to Belem: Belem used to be a suburb of Lisbon, and in a way it still kind of is, though it’s technically inside the city limits. There are a few things to do and see out in Belem, and it’s an easy 15-20 minute tram ride from the center to get there. There’s the Torre de Belem, a former defensive tower (that wasn’t particularly good at its job) turned prison that sits in a strategic location along the Tagus River. DON’T GO INTO THE TOWER – NOT WORTH IT. The Jerónimos Monastery is worth a visit for the beautiful cloister. The Monument to the Discoveries is a towering nod to Portugal’s intrepid past as one of the original naval powers in Europe. And, of course, there’s Pastéis de Belem, which claims to be the first place to sell the egg tarts.
2. Porto
Porto is a city with rich history and charm. It’s less touristy than Lisbon, making it feel more authentic. Here are some must-do activities in Porto:
- Visit the Sao Bento Train Station: One of the most beautiful train stations in the world.
- Explore Palacio Da Bolsa: A stunning building in the historical center, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Porto Cathedral: A beautiful cathedral in the heart of Porto.
- Livraria Lello: An enchanting bookshop, often considered one of the world’s most beautiful.
- Port Wine Cellars: Take a tour and tasting at renowned cellars like Graham’s or Sandeman.
- Check out the McDonald’s: Yes, the Porto McDonald’s is incredibly cool!
For a unique experience, take a walking tour to learn about Porto’s history. Porto is older than Lisbon, mainly because of the earthquake that leveled Lisbon in 1755. A walking tour will introduce you to all that history and more.
Don’t miss the viewpoints, or Miradouros. Miradouro da Vitória offers a great view over the city and river. Jardim de Morro, on the opposite side of the river, has some of the best views of the city and the Ponte Dom Luis I bridge.
Across the river from Porto is Vila Nova de Gaia, where all the port houses are located. Spend an afternoon touring and tasting port.
For food lovers, Queijaria Do Almada is a cheese lover’s dream. Sample a wide range of cheeses from Portugal and beyond. Obica, a mozzarella bar, offers amazing meats, cheeses, wines, and pastas. The Royal Cocktail Club is a stunning bar with fantastic cocktails. Manteigaria – Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata is famous for its mouthwatering pastel de nata, a traditional Portuguese pastry.
Porto is a compact city, so staying near the center will put you within walking distance of everything. The Ribeira neighborhood along the river is upscale, while Bolhão is more affordable and lively, especially at night.
