A dramatic prison escape in Portugal has led to the capture of one inmate in Morocco, while four others remain on the run. The escape, which occurred a month ago, has raised serious concerns about prison security and the effectiveness of law enforcement in tracking down fugitives.
On September 7, five inmates managed to escape from the high-security Vale de Judeus prison near Lisbon during visiting hours. The escape was facilitated by an accomplice who provided a long ladder, allowing the inmates to climb over the prison walls.
The escape was described as “very well prepared” by Luis Neves, the national director of the Judicial Police. He noted that the group had previously attempted to escape, indicating a premeditated plan that exploited the prison’s security weaknesses.
Fabio Loureiro was apprehended late on Sunday in Tangier, Morocco. He is expected to face a judge before being extradited back to Portugal to complete his sentence. The Portuguese Justice Minister welcomed the news of Loureiro’s detention, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in law enforcement.
