Blue Tongue Virus Puts Alentejo on High Alert: “We Won’t Be Free Until the Weather Changes”

The Alentejo region of Portugal is currently facing a significant health crisis as a new serotype of the Blue Tongue virus has been confirmed, leading to widespread concern among local farmers and veterinarians. The disease, primarily affecting livestock, has raised alarms due to its rapid spread and the lack of effective control measures.

Blue Tongue is a viral disease transmitted by insect vectors, particularly a type of midge known as Culicoides. This year, the emergence of serotype 3 has caught local livestock off guard, as they have not been previously exposed to this variant, leaving them without antibodies to combat the infection.

Currently, there is no “magic formula” to eradicate the Blue Tongue virus. The primary strategy is prevention, which includes approved insecticides to control midge populations and reducing insect exposure, especially during warmer months when they are most active.

As the region awaits cooler weather to help control insect populations, the focus remains on prevention and support for affected farmers. Without immediate action and awareness, the situation could worsen, leading to even greater economic and emotional distress for those in the agricultural community.
