Portugal has made significant strides in renewable energy, with renewables accounting for 73% of the electricity consumed in the country up to September 2024. This marks a notable increase in the share of renewable sources, particularly solar and hydroelectric power, contributing to a greener energy landscape.
According to data released by the national grid operator, REN, the production of renewable energy has reached impressive levels in Portugal. The breakdown of the energy sources is: Hydroelectric Power: 31%, Wind Energy: 26%, Solar Energy: 10% (up 35% from the previous year) with Biomass at 6% and Natural Gas at 8%.
The remaining 19% of electricity consumption was met through energy imports. In September alone, renewable sources supplied 55% of the electricity consumed, while non-renewable sources contributed 10%, and imports made up the remaining 35%.
Portugal’s commitment to renewable energy is evident in the substantial share of renewables in its electricity consumption. With continued growth in solar and hydroelectric power, the country is on track to further enhance its sustainable energy profile, contributing to global efforts in combating climate change and promoting energy independence.
