Franchising Sees Record Growth of Nearly 30% in Portugal in 2023

Busy franchise businesses in Portugal, reflecting growth in 2023.

The franchising sector in Portugal has experienced remarkable growth in 2023, with a staggering increase of 29.41% in revenue, reaching €22 billion. This surge is attributed to a rise in the number of brands operating in the country, from 518 to 542, and has significantly impacted the national economy.

The growth of the franchising sector has had a profound effect on Portugal’s economy. According to Cristina Matos, Secretary-General of the Portuguese Franchising Association (APF), the increase in revenue and job creation has bolstered domestic consumption, driving growth in key sectors such as services and retail. This, in turn, enhances Portugal’s position in the global economic landscape, particularly in tourism and commerce.

Franchises requiring an investment of up to €50,000 have seen the most significant growth, making up 71% of the sector. This trend is particularly beneficial for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), as it allows for greater accessibility and encourages innovation in business models.
